Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is, in practice, an umbrella term that embraces any inflammation in the upper genital tract and reproductive system, the cervix, or neck of the womb, uterus and fallopian tubes, the two tubes leading from the ovaries to the uterus. Different terms are used to describe this condition: Cervicitis, when the infection has attacked the cervix Endomentritis, when the inside of the uterus is affected Salpingitis, when the infection has penetrated as far as the fallopian tubes Salpingo-oophoritis , when tubes and ovaries are infected There are various grades of infection, ranging from slight swelling and reddening to an abscess discharging pus. If the infection spreads, because of a burst abscess, it can lead to peritonitis, when the inside of the pelvic cavity becomes inflamed or perihepatitis in which the tissues of the liver are affected.
